Okay, it's been six weeks since last I wrote here, so I thought I'd get back into the fray with something positive.
We recently received a link to an old music video produced by Playing for Change, "Stand By Me." Getting it reminded me of just how much I like the organization that created it. Playing for Change (PFC) gets musicians from around the world-- some well-known, some street buskers, some known only locally --to play together, one-at-a-time, and then to get the music "out there" for the world to hear. PFC also raises funds to build a music school and arts center in South Africa, and to repair and renovate Tibetan refugee centers in India and Nepal. Watch the video below to learn more. And then, enjoy the two music videos that follow it:

Yet another blow. Luciano Pavarotti succumbed to pancreatic cancer this morning (Thurs, 6 September 2007) at the age of 71.
Goodness gracious, how we will miss him!
What a voice! And what a beautiful man! He not only dedicated his life to music, but to humanity, as well... particularly children in all the war-torn areas of this planet. He raised money for refugees of genocide, in support of HIV/AIDS research and on-the-ground healthcare throughout the Global South, children's rights, the elimination of land-mines, and the eradication of global poverty.
All this notwithstanding, it was his voice-- rich, passionate, textured, and incredibly evocative --that moved us to tears and wild applause (even for his recordings). His singing was a gift to humankind. It was a standard of human perfection. He gave everything he had, both as a singer and as the best that a human-being could ever aspire to be.
Our grief is overwhelming.
All we can do-- as corny as this sounds --is hope he'll be singing with the angels for eternity.
